This project is a documentation of my process learning how to letterpress print, as well as an exploration of materials and a showcase of what I created in the process. I made the book with just type and traditional methods of printing without making and printing with plates, so the materials that I had available to me helped to guide and inspire my designs.
I was lucky enough to be able to have access to an incredible resource — the CC Stern Type Foundry. All the paragraphs in the book were cast on the Monotype Composition Casting Machine, with the help of Chris Chen, the machine operator. It was an incredible experience being able to utilize the resources there and learn about the process and equipment. All the type that wasn't cast at the foundry, I set by hand.
I was very interested in exploring the type and materials that were available to me and using them to create unique and interesting designs.
This project was really rewarding in many ways, especially connecting and learning from friends who have experience in printing. I really wouldn't have been able to make this book without their help and resources.
